the Yarra Oral Health Project
The Yarra Oral Health Promotion Project is one of a series of pilot
oral health projects funded by the Department of Human Services
as part of the strategic plan for 'Promoting Oral Health 2000-2004'
in Victoria.
The aim of the project is to improve the oral health status of
people with a mental illness/disability.
It is recognised that this group:
- is extremely vulnerable to oral disease
- is likely to have poorer oral health than average
- is less likely to access available dental care,
unless for an emergency
- is more difficult to provide appropriate
and acceptable care to
(DHS 1999)
Good oral health is recognised as being an integral part of the
overall health and wellbeing of this group. Pain and discomfort
associated with oral disease can often result in eating difficulties,
a poor diet and consequently affect appearance, self-esteem, social
interaction and quality of life.
Management of medication side effects and the effects of the illness
itself and prevention of dental emergencies through early intervention
are of particular importance for the oral health of people with
a mental illness.
Strategies, like the development of this website, focus upon workforce
development of primary mental health and dental workers. Raising
awareness and improving knowledge about oral health issues will
assist workers in providing the necessary information and support
to clients for improving their oral health and overcoming barriers
to accessing care.
The project fosters the development of partnerships between mental
health and dental services in the City of Yarra. These links provide
for greater understanding between services, of the issues affecting
the oral health of the target group.
Special thanks to the steering committee for their contribution
towards project development and implementation. The organisations
represented include, the City of Yarra, Dental Health Services Victoria,
North Yarra Community Health, North Richmond Community Health Centre
and St.Vincent's Mental Health Service. The committee also wishes
to acknowledge Colgate Oral Care for their sponsorship of the project
as well as St. Mary's House of Welcome and the Eastern Region Mental
Health Association for the artwork contributions from artgroup participants.
